This recipe has a storied past, going back to a time when Denver’s firehouses competed to create the ultimate dish using Grandma’s Egg Noodles. The competition was fierce, but this savory bake took the crown—and won the hearts of firefighters and noodle lovers alike. It became such a beloved staple that it even made it onto Grandma’s packaging for years.

But like all good things, it eventually left the limelight. Even so, we’ve never stopped hearing about it from fans. Letters, emails, and messages keep pouring in, asking, “When are you bringing it back?” Well, the wait is finally over, and we’re excited to share this recipe once more!

Firehouse Favorite is the perfect blend of hearty ingredients: seasoned hamburger and sausage, crisp green peppers and celery, savory tomatoes and mushrooms, all layered with Grandma’s thick, tender egg noodles and topped with melty cheese. It’s rich, satisfying, and exactly what you need after a long day on the slopes or a hard day’s work. Plus, if you double the recipe, it’s enough to satisfy even the hungriest crew—whether that’s a firehouse or just your family and friends.

Ingredients

½ lb hamburger
1 lb Italian sausage (make it spicy Italian for a nice hint of heat)
1 cup green peppers, diced
1 cup celery, diced
4 oz mushrooms, sliced
1 medium onion, diced
1 16 oz package of Grandma’s Frozen Noodles
1 28oz can of diced tomatoes
1 10 oz can of Tomato soup
½ lb grated colby/cheddar mix

Directions

Gather ingredients and prep vegetables and pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Heat a large pan and add ½ lb of hamburger and 1 lb of sausage. Break the hamburger and sausage into small pieces and cook until lightly browned. Remove and drain the fat from the pan. Set the meat aside and cover.
Put a large pot of water on to boil (6 quarts). A larger pot helps the noodles to cook better. Cook the egg noodles for 10 minutes or a few minutes shy of al dente (they will keep cooking in the oven once mixed).
Use the same pan to sauté the green peppers, celery, onions, and mushrooms until tender.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the meat, sautéd vegetables, egg noodles and add the canned tomato soup and canned diced tomatoes. Mix thoroughly.
Pour contents of the large mixing bowl into one or two large casserole dishes. Cover with tin foil and bake for 35-45 minutes.
Uncover and sprinkle with cheese. Bake another 10 minutes to melt and slightly brown the cheese.
Remove from the oven, let cool for 5 minutes and serve!
